Building a Future in Robotics with the Power of Mentorship

Mentee Spotlight: Iminabo Roberts

When Iminabo Roberts left Nigeria to pursue his studies in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Grambling State University in Louisiana, he carried a dream bigger than himself: to become a robotics engineer. Like many ambitious students, he quickly realized that the journey would require more than just academic grit — it would require guidance, community, and mentorship.

That’s when Iminabo found The Lantern Network.

“I was referred by a friend,” he recalls. “At that time, I was struggling to get interviews and online assessments. But once I joined TLN, I was able to connect with mentors who guided me. Things are much better now than they were before.”

The Power of Guidance

Iminabo’s mentorship journey has been transformative. Meeting with his mentor twice a month, he has discovered the value of consistent guidance — not only in career preparation but also in academic decision-making and personal growth.

“Sometimes I’m in tricky situations where I don’t know what to do,” he shared. “My mentors give me insights and perspectives that help me approach problems differently. I’ve never had advice from my mentor that didn’t benefit me in some way.”

His mentor’s advice has also pushed him to grow outside his comfort zone. An introvert by nature, Iminabo now actively networks at conferences, building the confidence and communication skills that will serve him in interviews and beyond.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Among TLN’s programs, two workshops stand out as favorites for Iminabo: Financial Literacy and Networking 101.

“Before, I wasn’t really exposed to finance,” he admits. “But the financial sessions opened my eyes to so many things I didn’t know.”

Networking workshops, while uncomfortable at first, proved equally impactful:

“It was hard for me to talk about myself, but those sessions pushed me to practice and improve. They’ve really helped me with my communication skills.”

Looking Ahead

Even as a freshman, Iminabo is already pushing boundaries. He’s currently sharpening his skills in robotics simulation, machine learning algorithms, and preparing to represent his school in the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC).

The Lantern Network hasn’t just equipped him with tools — it’s connected him to a community.

“I’ve been able to build friendships with other mentees and strengthen my support system. That means a lot.”

Mentorship That Inspires, Guides, and Propels

Iminabo’s story is proof that mentorship is more than advice — it’s a lifeline, a confidence-builder, and a launchpad for success.

At The Lantern Network, this is what we strive for: to help students like Iminabo not only dream of the future but be equipped to achieve it.

That’s what mentorship does: it inspires, guides, and propels you forward.
